Improvement in weather and climate prediction can have a significant impact on environment, natural resources, infrastructure, economy, and public health. Dynamics of geophysical fluids, such as the atmosphere and oceans, is highly nonlinear and chaotic mainly due to solar radiation and earth’s rotation. Both modeling and data sets of these systems are too vast to directly lead to human insights into the principles and underlying processes. Visual scalability is thus one of the grand challenges for weather and climate problems. The Augmentarium will help us visualize the causative factors behind atmospheric and oceanic processes, and will significantly enhance our ability to study nonlinear dependencies, and feedback over multiple scales and attributes, and hence improve forecast accuracy.
