Big Data in Astronomy

Astronomy is fundamentally a discovery science. Today, the discovery space in astronomy is moving to large datasets produced by a new generation of powerful instruments and simulations. The ability to access, manipulate, analyze, and visualize petabyte datasets, whether from observations or simulations, is a major challenge. The high-level questions to be addressed are: how do galaxies form and evolve? How do stars and planets form? Is there a strong pre-biotic chemistry in space which could steer the origins of life on planets? The innovative role of the Augmentarium in our research will be to create the cyber-assisted exploration and discovery environment for finding the science in the data.
